Corrosion Protection Guidelines: Ford/Lincoln - UPDATE

A key factor in collision repair is making long-lasting repairs. When a vehicle is repaired, many areas of corrosion protection are disturbed. This creates corrosion hot spots that, left untreated, leads to corrosion and potentially a repair failure. However, certain precautions can be taken to safely and properly restore the corrosion protection throughout the repair process. OEMs often give specifications on restoring corrosion protection. These specifications generally include seam sealer, adhesives, foam fillers, and cavity waxes. Let’s take a look at what Ford/Lincoln says.

Information for corrosion protection can be found in the vehicle-specific Workshop Manual (WSM) under: 501-25 Body Repairs – General Information. Some key areas to highlight include:

  • Specifications
    • Provides an approved list of materials, including foams, seam sealer, adhesives, undercoats, and cavity wax.
  • Descriptions And Operations ➤ Impact Of Insufficient Repair Quality
    • States: "Body repairs usually require a significant level of intervention in the existing body shell structure. The corrosion protection, seals, and NVH components are destroyed and must be replaced."
  • Descriptions And Operations ➤ Sealer, Underbody Protection Material And Adhesives
    • Provides examples of seam sealer and NVH applications on typical areas of the vehicle.
  • General Procedures ➤ Corrosion Prevention
    • Provides location examples and general information on the installation of cavity wax and undercoating.

Ford/Lincoln typically shows vehicle-specific corrosion protection installation locations in the body repair procedures.

Always follow OEM repair procedures for all repairs. Failure to follow corrosion protection guidelines can lead to the premature failure of a repair. Using the proper corrosion protection ensures a complete, safe, and quality repair.
