FCA/Stellantis: Bumper Cover Removal With Active Air Dams

Some FCA/Stellantis vehicles use active air dams underneath the front bumper cover to improve the aerodynamics of the vehicle. With active air dams, comes some considerations when removing and installing a front bumper cover. Let’s take a look at what FCA/Stellantis has to say.

While going through the service manual of a 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia, for example, you may come across a front bumper cover removal and installation procedure that specifies the use of a scan tool. This is because removing a front bumper cover from a vehicle with an active air dam requires the air dam to be placed in the full open position.

Once the bumper cover is installed, the scan tool will again need to be used to program the active air dam once it is connected to the vehicle again. The service manual refers to this as the “active aerodynamic system self-learning procedure."

If the proper procedure is not performed, the active air dam will not operate as designed while driving the vehicle. While this is one example, it is important to search vehicle-specific information to find out if the vehicle being repaired has an active air dam or not, and whether any special procedures are required before performing any repairs.

Always follow OEM procedures to help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
