One-Time-Use Parts And Fasteners: Subaru - UPDATE

What is a one-time-use part, and how do you determine if a fastener, clip, or part can be reused? These are questions that we are confronted with in the collision industry quite a lot. The other big question is "Where do I find this information?"

As the Repairability Technical Support (RTS) team researches OEMs for one-time-use fastener/part information, we are putting together a series of articles on how and where to locate this information for specific OEMs. Let’s take a look at Subaru.

Subaru uses written "do not reuse" instructions or warnings within vehicle specific service manuals. These warnings are typically found in the removal and installation procedures of certain parts, like trim panels and impact sensors.

For example, per the 2020 WRX Service Manual ➤ Body Section ➤ Airbag System AB: "Do not reuse mounting bolts and nuts of airbag module."

"Do not reuse the bolts and nuts when the following parts are removed. Always replace with the specified new bolts and nuts.

  • Airbag control module
  • Front door impact sensor
  • Front sub sensor
  • Side airbag sensor
  • Curtain airbag sensor
  • Satellite safing sensor"

Per the 2020 WRX Service Manual ➤ Body Section ➤ Exterior/Interior Trim: "Do not reuse the nuts and bracket - carrier. Water leakage may occur if not replaced with a new part."

A service bulletin has been released which announces the availability of airbag curtain module fasteners for specific models which were previously unavailable. Make sure to review the latest bulletin to have the most up-to-date information.

Following OEM procedures, including the identification and use of one-time-use fasteners/parts, is important in order to help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
