Repairer Driven News: Material Usage on 2020 Ford Escape

Ford’s redesigned 2020 Escape utilizes much more boron steel in the structure, it has been described as a "plentiful" amount. In addition to the boron usage, a long martensitic ultra-high strength steel tube goes from the A-pillar to the C-pillar. An article published by Repairer Driven News (RDN) goes into more detail.

A brief overview of some of the materials used includes mild steel for outer skin panels, outers range from bake hardened steel to HSLA, and aluminum for the hood. Another important matter to note is that depending on the specific model, there may be differences in the vehicle structure. The side structure in the hybrid has the addition of an extruded aluminum reinforcement, which fills the rocker structure. This is meant to increase the protection of the battery during a side impact.
