Non-SRS Wiring Repairs: Rivian

What is a non-SRS wiring repair? It is the repairing of an electrical component that is not part of the supplemental restraints system circuit (usually identified by yellow wire looms). As technology increases on vehicles, so does the number of components that utilize electricity. Many of the sensors and modules are becoming smarter and more sensitive. If the wire is too long, the wrong gauge, or spliced in the wrong location, it can cause malfunctions in the components that it’s powering. Many OEMs have different restrictions and guidelines for repairing wiring that does not control SRS components. On the other hand, there are OEMs that don’t allow wiring repairs at all, so full harness replacement is the only option.

Rivian has a Harness Repair Guidelines document that provides information for wire repairs. This document can be found in vehicle-specific service information under: 78: Low Voltage Electrical, General ➤ Disable 12V Power ➤ Harness Repair Guidelines.

This document includes information such as:

  • Damage or specific harnesses that cannot be repaired
  • Wire repair instructions
  • Pigtail or connector-related repairs

Per the Harness Repair Guidelines document:

"Not all damage to harnesses can be repaired. The following situations require harness replacement:

  • Damage to high voltage wires (wires with orange insulation.)
  • Damage to Ethernet cables.
  • Damage caused by a thermal event.
  • Damage at a location where a harness is repeatedly flexed.
  • Damage caused by flooding.
  • The wire insulation has become brittle."

Rivian also includes guidelines for:

  • When damage becomes excessive
  • Insulation repair
  • Severed wiring

Lastly, Rivian includes instructions for proper wiring splicing with a non-insulated crimp barrel and adhesive shrink tubing with staggered locations if repairing multiple wires.

It is important to read and follow OEM procedures to be certain what electrical wiring repairs can be carried out to help achieve a complete, safe, and quality repair.
