Back-To-Basics: Headlamp Restoration

Sometimes going back-to-basics can make the difference between a quality repair and a failed repair. When it comes to repairing headlamp lenses, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Headlamp lenses can become scratched, foggy, or cracked over time. Repairing the headlamp lenses may be an option. A few considerations when repairing headlamps include:

  • Removing minor scratches on the lens using an abrasive method, such as buffing, may degrade the ultraviolet (UV) coating on the lens.
  • Matching to the opposite side. Due to lens-clarity degradation from UV rays, a repaired or replaced headlamp may not match the other headlamp.
  • Matching the original headlamp to the repaired or new one may be accomplished with restoration products.
  • Identifying how the replacement parts are serviced. A replacement for a cracked lens may only be available as a lens and housing assembly or as an entire headlamp assembly.

Depending on where you are located, repairability of lenses may differ. Check local laws for any lens repairability regulations. Making sure that headlamps are repaired correctly based on the type of damage can help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
