Can Damaged Cab Mount Brackets Be Repaired?

(Figure 1) If the part is not available as a separate service part, replacement of a major part of the frame, or the entire frame, may be the only option.

When determining repair vs. replace options for damaged cab-mounting areas, determine if the vehicle maker providesa service part and written replacement procedures. If there is no replacement procedure, but the service part is available, duplicate the original factory attachment method. If the part is not available as a separate service part, replacement of a major part of the frame, or the entire frame, may be the only option (See Figure 1).

When deciding if straightening a cab-mounting bracket is an option, there are a few things that need to be considered. First, and foremost, are there any OEM warnings against the repair? The part should not be repaired if there are warnings against it. Also, the vehicle maker may not have any recommendation for repair, at least to the bracket itself (See Figure 2).

Additionally, what is the chance for repeat damage? This not only includes parts in areas that will be subject to continued stress like suspension mounting locations, but in vulnerable areas if there is another collision. 12527(Figure 2) This bracket is available as a separate service part.Is the bracket bent, kinked, or is the bolt hole elongated? If the bracket is bent, is there access to return the bracket to the same shape and state? If the bracket is kinked, it must be replaced because it cannot be returned to the same shape and state. If the bracket bolt hole is elongated or torn it should be replaced. If it is straightened and welded, the bracket is no longer the same shape and state.

With damage to mounting areas, whether to repair and how to repair becomes a business decision, since every type of damage is unique and there are limited OEM recommendations.
