High-Voltage Handling And Storage Considerations: Volvo

High-voltage (HV) vehicles have some special considerations for handling and storing HV batteries and other components. The dangers of HV batteries are potential even after removal which is why certain precautions are needed. Let’s see what Volvo has to say.

Volvo has a position statement, EV Battery & Vehicle Handling Post Collision, that provides warnings and battery damage inspection information.

Per the Volvo position statement:

  • "If the repair work cannot be started immediately, the vehicle should be positioned in a fire-protected area outdoors. A safety distance of 15 meters (17 yards) should be created between the vehicle and any combustible items. Cordon vehicle, 5 meters by 2.5 meters, and place warning sign. Cover vehicle with nonflammable weather resistant cover to keep out moisture."
  • "Prior to allowing the vehicle to enter the repair area, perform a visual inspection...)"
  • "Battery enclosure - Inspect for any external leaks, signs of moisture accumulation, corrosion, deformations, tears and cracks, signs of an electrical arc, and damaged connectors if found contact your local Volvo Service Team. If any electrical odors, fumes, smoke, sparks, flames, bubbling/gurgling are observed during the inspection call emergency services."

For damage to the battery enclosure Volvo states:

  • "Maximum 8 mm deep cavity measured over a length of 500 mm."
  • "No holes may occur in the outer layer of the plate."

Volvo has a document found in vehicle-specific repair manuals pertaining to HV storage and handling. Information found in the Checking High Voltage Battery After Vehicle Collision document includes:

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Storage considerations for a removed HV battery
  • Storage considerations for a removed damaged HV battery
  • Precautions for burn damaged HV batteries

Volvo states: "Volvo Electric Vehicle (EV) repairs should only be performed by trained technicians at approved locations. A signed Permit to Work is required."

All precautions, including placards and personal protective equipment (PPE) must be observed when performing repairs on HV vehicles. Make sure to utilize Volvo vehicle-specific repair information prior to beginning any repairs.
