Sometimes, going back to basics can make the difference between a quality repair and a failed repair. There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to GMA welding with adhesive bonding.
Squeeze-type resistance spot welding (STRSW) is the most common welding method when performing weld bonding procedures. However, when access to the required areas for STRSW is not possible, the vehicle maker procedures may specify GMA welding, blind rivet bonding, or only adhesive in specific locations.
After the panel is cut and processed, the mating flanges must be prepared for adhesive and welding. The adhesive must be kept far enough away from the weld area. The technician should mark the weld area before applying adhesive by covering the area with tape or scribing a line. Note, a good time to mark the weld areas is during an early panel test fit.
Depending on the final preparation method of the immediate weld zone, special caution must be taken to ensure no solvents, metal filings, sand, or other debris are introduced into the flange mating area.
Remember to always follow OEM procedures and guidelines to ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
