Repairer Driven News: 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Plug-In Hybrid

Repairer Driven News (RDN) released an article on the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid which features up to 25 miles of pure electric driving and all power modes available when shifted into 4 low.

The article details the high-voltage (HV) battery location and how the second row of seats were redesigned to accommodate it and allow for easy access. Despite the addition of the hybrid system, there is not a significant change in weight or structural changes in this plug-in hybrid as this advanced drivetrain was taken into consideration when designing this generation of Wrangler.

The battery is encased in aluminum with a steel structure underneath it to protect not only the battery, but other components, such as the charger and the power converter. From the factory, all of the high-voltage electronics are sealed and waterproof, including the wiring, allowing the Jeep to go through up to 30 inches of water.

HV battery cooling and heating is provided by a dedicated system which includes a battery heater and chiller. The HV battery powered heater is independent of the passenger compartment electric heater, but the chiller is cooled by the same refrigerant for the A/C system. This A/C system has an HV electric compressor and upgraded parts such as the A/C condenser to handle the extra heat from the HV battery.
