OEM Linking Pin: 2013-2014 Ford Fusion A-Pillar Laser Weld Replacement

As part of the I-CAR Repairability Technical Support (RTS) OEM linking pin activity, we are helping to connect the collision repair industry to the vehicle makers. Recently we had a technical inquiry that asked how to replace the laser weld on the A-Pillar of a 2013 Ford Fusion.

The body repair manual procedure states to remove the spot welds in the windshield flange area to remove the A-Pillar. The installation procedure states to spot weld the new A-Pillar in the windshield flange area. On the A-Pillar of this vehicle, there is a laser weld that interferes with the replacement operation, so we reached out to Ford for clarification.

Per our contact at Ford: “MIG plug welds may be subbed for the laser welds in this application with 25 mm spacing between plug welds.”
