I-CAR Understanding High Voltage Safety Course

More hybrid and electric vehicles are making their way into collision repair facilities as these vehicles are becoming more prevalent. One of the main concerns on these vehicles is how to safely work around high-voltage (HV) while repairing them. I-CAR has created a course that informs the technician on aspects of high-voltage such as:

  • Effects of electricity on the human body
  • Personal protection for HV safety
  • Electric vehicle HV systems
  • HV safety measures

The course explains electrical principles and how they apply to the human body, such as voltage, current, resistance, and Ohm’s Law. This is important information to know as the HV system has much greater potential to inflict injury or death with so much energy flowing through it.

You also learn about HV circuit isolation and other safety measures designed into the vehicles, as well as common system parts and their function.

Personal protection is extremely important when working around HV batteries, wires, and connected system parts. Understanding the difference between conductors and insulators and where the human body fits into the electrical equation is examined. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to protect yourself with the proper equipment. You learn what equipment should be worn, and what not to wear when working around HV.

Knowing how an HV system works and how to protect yourself helps ensure your safety and the safety of others. The course for understanding high-voltage safety equips you with the knowledge you need to help perform a complete, safe, and quality repair.
