One-Time-Use Parts And Fasteners: Kia

What is a one-time-use part, and how do you determine if a fastener, clip, or part can be reused? These are questions that we are confronted with in the collision industry quite a lot. The other big question is "Where do I find this information?"

As the Repairability Technical Support (RTS) team researches OEMs for one-time-use fastener/part information, we are putting together a series of articles on how and where to locate this information for specific OEMs. Let’s take a look at Kia.

Kia provides written instructions as well as a symbol to identify if a fastener/part is intended to be used only once. It is important to note that not all one-time-use parts are identified with a symbol, and the procedure steps will have to be read carefully.

For example, per the 2021 Kia Telluride Shop manual ➤ Steering System ➤ Motor Driven Power Steering ➤ Steering Column and Shaft ➤ Repair Procedures: "NOTICE: Always use a new bolt."

For example, per the 2020 Kia Optima Shop manual ➤ Suspension System ➤ Tire Pressure Monitoring System ➤ TPMS Sensor ➤ Repair Procedures: "To prevent the valve from rotating and deviating the set position while the nut is being tightened, push the valve into the set position (inside the metal brackets). Tighten to the specified torque (8 Nm) and do not reuse the nut."

Following OEM procedures, including the identification and use of one-time-use fasteners/parts, is important in order to help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
