Ford/Lincoln Position Statement: Pre- And Post-Repair System Scanning - UPDATE

All of the advancements in vehicle technology in recent years have led to Ford and Lincoln position statements on pre- and post-repair scanning. Let’s take a look at the updated guidelines laid out by Ford/Lincoln on this subject.

The Ford Pre- And Post-Diagnostic Scanning During A Collision Repair Required position statement and the Lincoln Pre- And Post-Diagnostic Scanning During A Collision Repair Required position statement states: "all Ford Motor Company vehicles (model year 1996 and newer) involved in a collision (defined as damage beyond minor outer-panel cosmetic distortion) are required to undergo both pre-repair and post-repair diagnostic scans to restore all safety and driver-assist systems to their pre-accident performance condition."

There are reasons given in the position statement supporting the need for pre- and post-repair scanning, such as:

  • "Pre-repair scans establish a baseline and reveal diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that may not trigger warning lights."
  • "Some faults need multiple drive cycles or proper vehicle voltage to manifest."
  • "Removing panels, glass, or components can introduce new fault codes requiring recalibration or initialization."
  • "Post-repair scans verify that no new DTCs were introduced and confirm full system restoration."
