General Motors (GM) has followed other OEMs by updating one of their position statements that disallows the use of recycled and salvaged parts.
In August 2016, GM previously released their Use Of Salvage And Recycled Parts position statement. In March 2026, that position statement was updated to the Use Of Genuine GM Original Equipment Parts position statement. In June 2026, GM revised the document, which now states:
- "General Motors does not support and strictly prohibits the use of salvage, recycled/used, or non-Genuine aftermarket parts on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles.”
- “Because GM does not design, engineer, test, or validate salvage, recycled/used, or aftermarket parts for use on GM vehicles, GM cannot confirm that such parts meet GM safety, performance, or durability requirements.”
This document also defines what GM considers a recycled part, an aftermarket part, a salvaged part, and a non-GM reconditioned part.
