Repairer Driven News: Toyota Warns Against Painting Flanges Before Attaching Auto Glass

Auto glass has long been considered an important part of a vehicle’s structure. In a publication released by Repairer Driven News (RDN), Toyota discusses how their pinch weld flanges are prepared in a way that “provides the best paint adhesion and corrosion protection and creates the perfect bonding surface for glass.”

As a result, the final OEM paint finish is usually too complex for a repair shop to replicate, and Toyota advises shops to not attempt it. Toyota instructs shops to save as much of the e-coat as possible. In the event that a full replacement is necessary, there is an epoxy primer that Toyota recommends.
