OEM ADAS Radar Optimized Color Resources: Genesis

Changes in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) radar technology are introducing new refinishing considerations. We know that paint film thickness can affect the performance of ADAS radars, but color formula selection may also be a contributing factor. What resources do repairers have available? Let’s see what Genesis has to say.

Genesis has a Refinishing Precautions For Paint With Aluminum Contents technical service bulletin (TSB). This document is found in: Service Information ➤ TSB ➤ Body (Interior And Exterior) ➤ Refinishing Precautions For Paint With Aluminum Contents.

The document states: "If the aluminum content in the paint exceeds a specified amount, the paint could cause diffused reflection of the signals from the front corner radar units. This interference may cause false vehicle detections in the ADAS and improper Highway Lane Change Assist operation."

Genesis provides a chart for allowable aluminum content to prevent diffused reflection of radar signals. This chart contains exterior color name, color code, and maximum aluminum content as a percentage.

More information pertaining to the front corner radars (sensors behind the front bumper cover) is in vehicle-specific service information under: Shop ➤ Equipped Engine ➤ Advanced Driver Assistance System ➤ Advanced Driver Assistance System Driving ➤ Front Corner Radar.

For example, in a 2024 G90 Front Corner Radar installation procedure Genesis states: "When installing front corner radar units, brackets, and extension wires, mounting angle of the front corner radar must be checked. *How to check mounting angle: When the bumper is installed, drive on the road with guardrails over 20 minutes and check if any DTC regarding mounting angle shows up."

Improper color selection may cause ADAS to malfunction and potentially fail. Check OEM repair information to identify what restrictions may apply to the repairs you are considering. Always verify that the ADAS is functioning properly after completing repairs.
