OEM Linking Pin: Honda/Acura Adhesively Bonded Joint Repair

As part of the I-CAR Repairability Technical Support (RTS) OEM linking pin activity, we are helping to connect the collision repair industry to the vehicle makers. We‘ve had technical inquiries that asked for clarification on repairing parts or assemblies with adhesively bonded joints on Honda and Acura vehicles.

Many Honda/Acura body repair manual (BRM) procedures specify factory adhesive and the use of adhesive for replacement. We reached out to our contact at Honda for clarification on repairing these areas, specifically when it comes to straightening and pulling.

Per our contact at Honda: "We do not have a published document restricting repairs to a quarter panel with the hemmed wheelhouse opening of the outer panel.

It would be recommended to perform an inspection of the sealant/adhered areas to check for panel separation. If panel separation exists, it is recommended to replace the panel so proper adhesive installation can be conducted. If the shop elects to repair the outer panel, pulling is not allowed in the area to not risk panel separation during repairs."
