Changes in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) radar technology are introducing new refinishing considerations. We know that paint film thickness can affect the performance of ADAS radars, but color formula selection may also be a contributing factor. What resources do repairers have available? Let’s see what Nissan has to say.
When researching a 2023-2025 Nissan ARIYA, Nissan provides the ARIYA Bumper Refinishing Requirements position statement. This document offers guidance on approved paint supplier and product lines and precautions for the repairability of ARIYA bumper covers including:
- "Improper repairs, excessive paint thickness, and bumpers that are painted more than once may result in system degradation and inaccuracy of the ADAS system, which may cause unintended system warnings or other malfunctions."
- "Repair materials (such as putties or fillers) may not be added to the original bumper in the side radar zones."
Precautions for refinishing bumpers are found in vehicle-specific service information under: Body Exterior, Doors, Roof & Vehicle Security ➤ Exterior ➤ Removal And Installation ➤ Front Bumper ➤ Inspection. Nissan states:
- "Color base (including plastic primer and primer surfacer) painting can be performed only once inside radar irradiation area and recoating is not allowed. (Definition of once is until the color base coat is dyed, not the times of sprays)"
- "Only the body exterior colors adopted for this model can be painted."
Within the bumper inspection document, Nissan provides charts and illustrations to describe permissible repairs and measurements to identify the irradiation area of the side radar.
Lastly, other precautions and are found under: Cruise Control & Driver Assistance ? Cruise Control System ➤ ProPilot Assist 2.0 ➤ System Description ➤ Handling Precaution ➤ Precautions For ProPilot Assist 2.0:
Improper color selection may cause ADAS to malfunction and potentially fail. Check OEM repair information to identify any restrictions that may apply to the repairs you are considering. Always verify that the ADAS is functioning properly after completing repairs.
