Bumper Cover Repair With ADAS: Nissan/INFINITI

A simple bumper repair on a modern vehicle may not be as simple as it seems. New technologies like blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and other advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) utilize sensors behind the bumper covers. The ability for these sensors to be able to see clearly normally requires special caution when considering a bumper repair. Many OEMs have different levels of warnings when it comes to repairing bumper covers with ADAS. So, what does Nissan/INFINITI say on the subject?

When considering repairs to a Nissan or INFINITI bumper cover, you'll want to read the Nissan Blind Spot Warning (BSW) Precautions position statement and the INFINITI Blind Spot Warning (BSW) Precautions position statement. These position statements specify: "Nissan/INFINITI DOES NOT support any repair, body filler application, or paint work on the rear bumper cover in the general area of the side radars." The Nissan and INFINITI service manuals clearly state: "Do not attach a sticker (including transparent material), install an accessory or paint work near the side radar."

The position statements go on to state that: "The damaged bumper cover should be instead replaced with a new bumper cover."

The Repairability Technical Support (RTS) team reached out to Nissan/INFINITI for answers regarding refinishing new bumper covers and where repairs are acceptable on bumper covers. These answers can be found in the OEM Linking Pin: Nissan Blind Spot Warning Clarification article.

Making repairs on bumper covers with sensors may cause the sensors to not function properly. Always be sure to reference the vehicle-specific body repair manual and other documents prior to performing any repairs.

Please note there is a specific position statement for bumper cover repairs on the Nissan ARIYA.
