Weld-Through Primer Guidelines: Jaguar Land Rover

Weld-through primers are generally a zinc-based product that are applied to the mating surfaces prior to welding. Corroding zinc forms zinc oxide which protects the steel. This is called sacrificial corrosion. For a quality weld to be made it’s required that the weld-through primer be removed from the direct weld zone before welding the joint when GMA welding. Many OEMs have a position on when and how to use weld-through primer or when it shouldn’t be utilized. Let’s see what Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) recommends and where this information can be found.

Per the JLR body repair manuals:

  • “Corrosion protection needs to be applied to all inner contact surfaces that are going to be spot-welded or MIG or MAG plugged.
  • When using aerosols, take care not to contaminate adjacent parts with spray mist.
  • JLR approved of two application processes to apply the weld-through primer: spray and brush.
  • The welding primer must be allowed to dry before welding is carried out.”

Land Rover approves two different welding primers for use:

  • 3M part number 50410 Weld-Thru II Coating
  • Teroson part number 333170

Jaguar approves of two different primers:

  • 3M part number 09113
  • Teroson part number 158.18T

The numbers listed above are U.K. part numbers however, we have confirmed with our contacts at 3M that U.S. part number 05917 is equivalent to the U.K. part numbers specified by JLR.

Use the vehicle-specific body repair manuals to determine which type of welding is required for the repair you are performing. Failure to follow OEM procedures will sacrifice the safety and quality of the repair.
