Panel Layering Considerations

Panel layering often comes up in the collision repair process. The order that overlapping panels were put on at the factory may affect how parts are replaced during the repair process. The build sequence may also affect access to the joints that require separation for replacement parts.

Due to these multiple layers, vehicle makers often develop various partial part replacement procedures and sectioning procedures to allow repairs to be completed. In some cases, a sectioning procedure will create a lap joint where one previously did not exist. In these cases, failure to layer the joint properly could result in a repair that would not meet the requirements for a complete, safe, and quality repair. It is crucial to follow the specific repair procedure to ensure that the replacement panels are layered correctly for corrosion protection, collision energy management, and water and dust intrusion.
