Corrosion Protection Guidelines: Genesis
A key factor in collision repair is making long-lasting repairs. When a vehicle is repaired, many areas of corrosion protection are disturbed. This creates corrosion hot spots, that left untreated will lead to corrosion, and potentially a repair failure. However, there are certain precautions that can be taken to safely and properly restore the corrosion protection throughout the repair process. OEMs often give specifications on restoring corrosion protection. These specifications generally include seam sealer, adhesives, foam fillers, and cavity waxes. Let’s take a look at what Genesis says.
Information can be found in the vehicle-specific body repair manuals (BRMs) in three different areas:
- Adhesive information is found under Body Repair ➤ Body Repair Manual ➤ General Information. Colored illustrations of the vehicle display the locations for adhesives. Genesis calls out specific epoxy adhesives per vehicle.
- Seam sealer locations can be found under Body Repair ➤ Body Repair Manual ➤ Body Sealing Locations. This area does provide various reference illustrations.
- Sound deadener pads, under coating, and cavity wax can be found under Body Repair ➤ Body Repair Manual ➤ Corrosion Protection. Genesis does not specify products to use to replace any of the materials shown in the images.
Genesis will also have corrosion protection steps listed in specific repair procedures. Such as when to apply seam sealer and cavity wax.
Always follow OEM repair procedures for all repairs. Failure to follow corrosion protection guidelines can lead to premature failure on a repair. Using the proper corrosion protection will ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
