One-Time-Use Parts And Fasteners: Mazda

What is a one-time-use part, and how do you determine if a fastener, clip, or part can be reused? These are questions that we are confronted with in the collision industry quite a lot. The other big question is "Where do I find this information"?

As the Repairability Technical Support (RTS) team researches OEMs for one-time-use fastener/part information, we are putting together a series of articles on how and where to locate this information for specific OEMs. Let’s take a look at Mazda.

Mazda provides a statement under Workshop Manual ➤ General Information ➤ Service Cautions ➤ Reassembly area: "If removed, these parts should be replaced with new ones: cotter pins, gaskets, locknuts, lock washers, oil seals, O-rings and spring pins."

Within vehicle-specific procedures Mazda has Cautions which may have information on one-time use fasteners or parts. For example, the 2022 Mazda CX5 has a Caution under Workshop Manuals ➤ Body and Accessories ➤ Doors and Liftgate ➤ Liftgate Removal/Installation that states:

"Always replace a new inner liftgate grommet when installing the liftgate grommet. If the inner liftgate grommet is removed, the tab connection may weaken and it may cause water leakage."

Following OEM procedures, including the identification and use of one-time-use fasteners/parts, is important in order to help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
