Calibration Research Tips: Toyota/Lexus Intelligent Clearance Sonar System

While searching for information on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on an OEM repair information site, you may come across unique calibration procedures or events. These events can vary by year and model, even within a particular make. As the RTS team has been researching these systems, we have been identifying these atypical circumstances. In order to help you better understand them, we are putting together a series of articles that help with the repair and calibration of ADAS. Let’s take a closer look at Toyota/Lexus intelligent clearance sonar (ICS) system, and parking support brake system (PKSB).

You may notice systems called intelligent clearance sonar and parking support brake on the Toyota/Lexus sales site or in the owner’s manual and service manual. These are listed as additional park assist systems that require calibration after certain events. At first glance they may look rather complex, however, it is less complicated than it seems.

The ICS and PKSB are both simply comprised of two separate systems combined in one suite. The systems used for these suites are:

  • Intuitive park assist
  • Blind spot monitor/rear cross traffic alert

ICS and PKSB use the operations of these systems as well as their sensors. Both systems that make up the ICS and PKSB are calibrated separately from each other. They are not calibrated together as one system.

This means that if the ICS or PKSB is malfunctioning or requires calibration, then the blind spot monitor system and the intuitive park assist system calibration procedures would be used as needed.

It is essential to know what systems are on a vehicle, how they operate, and how they may interact with other systems.

It is important to always follow OEM procedures for repairs and calibration. Finding this information quickly and efficiently contributes to a complete, safe, and quality repair.
