Calibration Research Tips: Toyota Safety Sense

While searching for information on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on an OEM repair information site, you may come across unique calibration procedures or events. These events can vary by year and model, even within a particular make. As the RTS team has been researching these systems, we have been identifying these atypical circumstances. In order to help you better understand them, we are putting together a series of articles that help with the repair and calibration of ADAS. Let’s take a closer look at Toyota Safety Sense.

Toyota refers to Safety Sense as an active safety package that may include some of the following systems:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD)
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist

These systems frequently share the same inputs. The inputs often include the forward-facing camera and the millimeter wave radar sensor. Replacement and calibration procedures for these inputs can typically be found in Engine/Hybrid System in the repair manual. It is important to note that if one or more inputs fail or become inoperable, multiple systems of the Toyota Safety Sense package may not function as intended.

When searching vehicle-specific repair manuals, you will find that information on ADAS is located in several different locations within the manual. Fortunately, Toyota has kept specific systems in the same general areas across most manuals. Component location, and description and operation for most Safety Sense systems are found in the repair manuals in the locations below:

  • Engine/Hybrid System
  • Vehicle Exterior
  • Vehicle Interior

It is important to always follow OEM procedures. Finding information quickly and efficiently contributes to a complete, safe, and quality repair.
