Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: 2019 Ford Explorer

While many have noticed that advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), are showing up on vehicles, there still is confusion on what is required of these systems after a collision occurs. The Ask I-CAR team frequently get questions in regard to calibration of ADAS. Many of these questions can be answered simply by searching the OEM Calibration Requirements Search. However, there are some questions that may need more details than the calibration search provides. Let’s take a look at the 2019 Ford Explorer ADAS.

For 2019, the Explorer can be equipped with active park assist, adaptive cruise control, collision warning, collision braking, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, rear view, park assist, and rear cross traffic. This means that there is a large array of cameras and sensors that collision repairers will need to be aware of, many of which will require calibrations. Information for when these calibrations are required can be found in the vehicle specific repair information, and also on the 2019 Ford Explorer OEM Calibration Requirements Search page.

Starting at the front of the vehicle there are up to six ultrasonic sensors that collect data for the park assist system. There can be another six in the rear bumper also. Systems with traditional park assist will have four sensors in each bumper. Active park assist system have two additional sensors on the outside edges of each bumper cover. These sensors are spaced out going from one side of the bumper to the other. Calibration is required for this suite of sensors depending on different events.

Located just below the grille in the bumper cover is the front camera. This is part of the parking camera system. Another camera is located on the liftgate in the trim piece, above the license plate. Calibration is necessary for these cameras.

Behind the front bumper cover is the cruise control module. This radar unit is located under the bumper reinforcement on the left side of the vehicle. Calibration is required for this sensor. Ford warns that before calibrating, inspections must be performed on the sensor and the sensor bracket to ensure there is no damage to either.

The forward-facing camera is located inside the vehicle at the top center of the windshield in front of the rearview mirror. A dynamic calibration is required for this camera after certain events take place.

Behind the rear bumper cover bolted to the outer quarter panel there is a blind spot radar sensor on each side. These sensors are on the outer sides of the vehicle. Ford says when replacing these sensors, the module configurations need to be transferred to the new module. Ford does not list a calibration procedure for these sensors.

This is just a brief overview of some of the different required procedures for the 2019 Ford Explorer. Always consult the OEM repair information to get the exact information and procedures required to service the ADAS.
