OEM Linking Pin: Ford/Lincoln Aluminum Adhesively Bonded Joint Repairability

As part of the I-CAR Repairability Technical Support (RTS) OEM linking pin activity, we are helping to connect the collision repair industry to the vehicle makers. We‘ve had technical inquiries that asked for clarification on repairing aluminum parts or assemblies with adhesively bonded joints on Ford/Lincoln vehicles.

Many Ford/Lincoln Workshop manuals procedures specify factory adhesive and the use of adhesive for replacement. We reached out to our contact at Ford/Lincoln for clarification on repairing these areas, specifically when it comes to straightening and pulling.

Per our contact at Ford/Lincoln: “When repairing aluminum parts or assemblies, it is critical to remember that when adhesives are used, they will deteriorate when heated. Adhesively bonded joints can also be weakened if too much pulling and straightening is done to a part. Remove and replace any adhesive that was affected by heating."
