BMW/Mini: Repair Stage 1a

Figure 1

In this series, we will be highlighting the four different BMW Repair Stages. Though not each of the stages may apply to a particular repair, it is beneficial to familiarize yourself with each. The stages are located in vehicle-specific body repair manuals under 0 Contents of Body, General - Repair Method section (see Figure 1). Let’s take a closer look at the additional information available in Repair Stage 1a.

Repair Stage 1a - Replacement of screwed-on components has three subcategories to be aware of:

  • Blind rivet - provides recommended tools and equipment as well as a detailed procedure for setting blind rivets as well as a procedure for replacing blind rivets.
  • Blind rivet nuts and bolts - installation instructions for straight shank/hexagon rivet nut. Including important warnings and tips. For example: “Failure to comply with these instructions may result in the drill bit slipping and causing significant paint damage.”
  • Glass pane - though not considered a screwed-on part, this is where you will find the general procedures for the disassembly and installation of bonded window glass, the tools and materials for bonding glass, as well as a notes section on their window bonding repair kit.

Being diligent with reading and understating the complete procedure is vital to completing a safe and quality repair.
