Rivian Glass Replacement Requirements

The role of the windshield is a lot more complex than simply allowing a view of the road ahead. It is considered a structural part of the vehicle as it contributes to the strength of the roof and A-pillars. The windshield helps to manage collision energy and has become an integral part of several advanced safety systems.

It is commonly asked, "What is required when replacing a windshield?" With this question in mind, we have a series of articles that highlight some of the requirements from the various OEMs. As always, it is important to read through each vehicle-specific procedure to ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.

Let’s see what Rivian has to say for the 2020-2024 model years:

  • Approved adhesives and primer are in: Collision Repair General Information ➤ Approved Collision Repair Consumables ➤ Approved Chemicals.
  • It's important to stay within the same product line for the primer and adhesive. Refer to the product maker directions for curing time and do not use adhesive after its expiration date.
  • For repair or replacement in the pinchweld area, Rivian states: “The finish in this area should be only epoxy primer or factory-applied e-coat.”
  • The rain/light sensor is a one-time use part and cannot be transferred to a new windshield.
  • If the windshield is being reused, some parts do not need to be reinstalled. Check the service manual for highlighted parts.

Vehicles equipped with a camera near the rearview mirror (Camera, Driver Assistance, Front or Camera, Long Range, Front) require calibration. The calibration procedures are linked within the windshield replacement procedure. If a windshield is being reinstalled, the Remove And Reinstall procedure links to the Remove And Replace procedure that provides most of the procedure, including calibration, except specific steps only found in the reinstall procedure.

Rivian also provides vehicle-specific windshield replacement and calibration best practices that can be found on the Rivian Position Statement page. Vehicle-specific glass repair documents can be found on the Rivian Service Guidelines page.
