Straightening And Heat

A question often asked of the Repairability Technical Support (RTS) team is, “Does an OEM allow the use of heat when straightening?” Several OEMs provide a steel repairability matrix that provides information on when use of heat is allowed. Many OEM’s also specify heating and temperature limits based on the type of metal being repaired. We’ve researched documentation on the use of heat during repairs and compiled the information into a series of OEM-specific articles.

These articles have clarification on whether a specific OEM allows the use of heat during the repair process. A key aspect when it comes to straightening is to know the type of steel you are working with. Heat can permanently damage certain metals by breaking down the molecular structure that gives it strength and memory. This is very important information to know, as vehicle structures are made to keep passengers safe in the event of a collision. Weakening metal with heat can put passengers at high risk.

Always follow OEM procedures when it comes to the use of heat during the repair process to ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
