Considerations For Static Calibration

Static calibrations are used for calibrating many advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) components. With static calibration comes a few considerations.

First of all, what is static calibration? This is the process of using a scan tool, targets, and other special tools and equipment to calibrate cameras and sensors while the vehicle is stationary.

Some considerations for static calibrations are:

  • Special tools
    • Many static calibrations require the use of targets, reflectors, levels, scan tools, digital angle gauges, floor mats, and even simple things like cardboard, tape, string, and a tape measure. Most of the time, required tools are specified in the calibration procedure.
    • Another important piece of equipment would be a battery charger/maintainer to keep the vehicle from shutting down while calibrating.
  • Floor space
    • In some instances, OEMs require a certain distance of flat, open space around the vehicle to calibrate the camera/sensor properly. Make sure to check the service information for specifications on required space before beginning any calibrations. Another thing to keep in mind is making sure the floor is clean and clear around the vehicle.
  • Access to service information
    • The repair manual or service manual instructions will be needed. It is important to follow every step of the procedure in order to make sure the camera or sensor is calibrated correctly. This can include simple things like checking tire pressures, removing customers' belongings, fuel level, etc. Be sure to check the service information each time a calibration is needed and follow the steps just in case the procedure has changed.
  • Time allowance
    • Some calibrations are more intricate and complex than others. Static calibration procedures require precise measurements and target set-up, etc., which can involve more steps than expected.

Always follow OEM procedures, especially when it comes to calibrating ADAS, to ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
