Weld-Through Primer Guidelines

Weld-through primers are generally a zinc-based product that is applied to the mating surfaces prior to welding. When the weld is performed, the zinc liquefies and flows into the weld-pool, protecting the weld from corrosion. Many OEMs have a position on when and how to use weld-through primer or when it shouldn’t be utilized. Let’s see what we have found for weld-through primer guidelines.

After writing this series of articles, we found that the majority of OEMs do require the use of weld-through when replacing steel weld-on parts. Some OEMs do have a specific brand of weld-through primer that they require. We also located where this information can be found in the body repair manuals. It is important to note that weld-through primer should not be used on aluminum.

Use the vehicle-specific body repair manuals to determine which type of welding is required for the repair you are performing. Failure to follow OEM procedures will sacrifice the safety and quality of the repair.
