OEM Linking Pin: Subaru Welding Wire And Gas Clarification

As part of the I-CAR Repairability Technical Support (RTS) OEM linking pin activity, we are helping to connect the collision repair industry to the vehicle makers. Recently we had a technical inquiry that asked for clarification on what welding wire and shielding gas should be used when repairing a Subaru.

This question arose from the welding instructions provided in a procedure (see Figure 1). Concerns arose on the necessity of needing two separate welding wires and shielding gases when GMA welding. We reached out to Subaru for clarification.

Per our contact at Subaru: "Basically the wire type is an either/or situation. Some countries prefer the mixed gas and others non-mixed." This means that the wire you choose will determine which gas will be needed (see Figure 1).

We asked for further clarification regarding the use of just the YGW12 (equivalent to ER70S-6) because it was the more common wire. Per our contact at Subaru: "Yes. We dropped the YGW16 (equivalent to ER70S-3) from the 2020 standards for consistency in the USA market."
