OEM Linking Pin: Honda/Acura Pedestrian Protection Brackets

Recently, a repair facility had a question on pedestrian protection bracket repairability. A pedestrian protection bracket tends to be used for mounting fenders to the upper rail. The bracket is designed to be collapsible in the event that a pedestrian gets hit by the vehicle and lands on the hood/fenders. The bracket will collapse, which will dampen the blown to the pedestrian. I-CAR Repairability Technical Support (RTS) reached out to Honda for clarification.

In this case the part in question was a fender bracket on a 2018 Honda Odyssey. Per our contact at Honda: “Yes, these are part of the pedestrian mitigation safety system and should not be repaired. The service part is part of an assembly but may be removed and used independently. The associated parts are 590 MPa so MAG plug welding would be allowed.”

To help identify if a part may be part of the pedestrian protection system check out Honda’s Fundamentals of Unibody Construction - Honda/Acura Pedestrian Injury Mitigation Body. This can be found in Honda’s repair information and performing a find for "fundamentals".

Also make sure to check the MPa of the assembly and reference Honda’s Body Repair Manual Welding & Sectioning Guideline Revisions for available attachment methods.
