Non-SRS Wiring Repairs: Honda/Acura

What is a non-SRS wiring repair? It is the repairing of an electrical component that is not part of the supplemental restraints system circuit (usually identified by yellow wire looms). As technology increases on vehicles, so does the number of components that utilize electricity. Many of the sensors and modules are becoming smarter and more sensitive. If the wire is too long, the wrong gauge, or spliced in the wrong location it can cause malfunctions in the components that it’s powering. Many OEMs have different restrictions and guidelines for repairing wiring that does not control SRS components. On the other hand, there are OEMs that don’t allow wiring repairs at all, so full harness replacement is the only option.

Honda provides catalogs for replacement connectors, which allow you to order pigtail terminal repair kits and new connectors. Per American Honda Motor Co., Inc.: “If a connector and its terminals are not available or serviceable, wiring harness replacement will be required.” This means if there is damage to a wire or connector, but replacement parts or kits are not in the catalog, then the part is not serviceable.   1. Go to techinfo.honda.com
  2. Click Parts Info tab (top of webpage)
  3. Select Honda or Acura logo
  4. Enter VIN into search box (upper right side of webpage)

To find guidelines and procedures for terminal replacement, you may have to use an older vehicle, prior to the 2004 model year, but the information still applies. Terminal repair kits are also available through any Honda or Acura dealer parts department.

Below are several repair requirements from the Honda & Acura course:

  • Be sure to stagger the splice connector locations to prevent a “lump” of splice connectors would interfere with rewrapping the harness.
  • It is important to note that twisting or soldering wires together and applying electrical tape and/or heat shrink tube are not Honda-approved wire repairs.

It is important to read the service and repair manuals to make sure what repairs can be carried out and where, to achieve a complete, safe, and quality repair.
