Mercedes-Benz: Who Requires Or Recommends MIG Brazing?

In Europe, MIG brazing has been required or recommended on a widespread basis for several years. In the U.S., MIG brazing is not as common but is becoming more prevalent. As the RTS team is researching MIG brazing information, we are putting together a series of articles that identify OEM-specific MIG brazing recommendations and requirements for vehicles in the U.S. Let’s see what Mercedes-Benz has to say.

Per our contact at Mercedes-Benz: "The short answer is "Yes" MIG brazing is used on repairs in the US. It is normally used where 2 panels butt up to each other." Each vehicle-specific repair procedure specifies whether brazing is required and is typically referred to as "soldering."

Mercedes-Benz body repair manuals (BRMs) typically refer to brazing as "soldering." Many times, procedures call for MIG seam welding for installation, and then specify to grind that weld down and solder over the top. In this case, the solder would actually be a filler. Read each procedure thoroughly to know when solder is referenced as a filler and when it is being used as MIG brazing.

Mercedes-Benz BRMs specify a MIG brazing symbol within their symbol index. When MIG brazing is to be used, look for the symbol in the repair procedure.

It is important to note that MIG brazing should only be used where indicated in a vehicle-specific repair manual or where specified by the OEM to help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
