Calibration Research Tips: Kia Blind Spot Systems

While searching for information on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on an OEM repair information site, you may come across unique calibration procedures or events. These events can vary by year and model, even within a particular make. As the RTS team has been researching these systems, we have been identifying these atypical circumstances. In order to help you better understand them, we are putting together a series of articles that help with the repair and calibration of ADAS. Let’s take a closer look at the Kia blind spot systems.

Some models are equipped with multiple blind spot systems. Under certain circumstances, some of these systems perform as a lane keep function. These systems may not be mentioned in the service manual. However, the systems are mentioned in the owner’s manual and Kia refers to them by names such as:

  • Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist Rear
  • Smart Blind Spot System

These blind spot systems use a camera on the windshield to identify lane markings and radar sensors for the side and rear areas of the vehicle. When an approaching vehicle is detected within sensor range next to or behind the vehicle, the vehicle may apply the brakes to help keep you within the lane when the sensors detect a possible collision. This is possible by utilizing the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system and gently applying the brakes on the opposite side of the vehicle where the potential collision is detected. The blind spot collision avoidance system does not use steering operations.

Although this system acts as a lane keep assist system, it is not designed to keep the vehicle within the lane at all times. Always keep in mind that damage to one system on a vehicle may affect the ability of another system to function properly throughout the vehicle. For example, any damage to the ESC or braking system may make this function unavailable when needed by the driver.

It is important to always follow OEM procedures for repairs and calibration. Finding this information quickly and efficiently contributes to a complete, safe, and quality repair.
