Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: 2019 Kia Sportage

While many have noticed that advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are showing up on vehicles, there still is confusion on what is required of these systems after a collision occurs. The Ask I-CAR team frequently gets questions in regard to calibration of ADAS. Many of these questions can be answered simply by searching the OEM Calibration Requirements Search. However, there are some questions that may need more details than the calibration search provides. Let’s take a look at the 2019 Kia Sportage ADAS.

For 2019, the Sportage has available collision warning, collision braking, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, rear view, park assist, adaptive lighting, and rear cross traffic systems. This means that there is a large array of cameras and sensors that collision repairers will need to be aware of, many of which will require calibrations. The front bumper houses four ultrasonic sensors. There are an additional four sensors located in the rear bumper cover. These sensors are used by the park assist system. These sensors do not require calibration.

Located behind the front bumper cover, below the center of the bumper reinforcement, is a radar sensor. This sensor sends information to the collision warning and collision braking systems. Calibration will be required for this sensor after certain events.

In front of the rearview mirror is a forward-facing camera. This camera is an input for the collision warning, collision braking, and lane departure warning systems. There are several events that make calibration necessary for this camera.

The rear liftgate houses another camera. This camera provides the image for the rear view system. Calibration is not required for this camera.

With the rear bumper cover removed, below the tail lamps you will see a radar sensor on each corner of the vehicle. These sensors are used by the blind spot detection and rear cross traffic systems. There are multiple events that require calibration for these sensors.
