Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: 2019 Lexus RX

While many have noticed that advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are showing up on vehicles, there still is confusion on what is required of these systems after a collision occurs. The Ask I-CAR team frequently gets questions in regard to calibration of ADAS. Many of these questions can be answered simply by using the OEM Calibration Requirements Search. However, there are some questions that may need more details than the calibration search provides. Let’s take a look at the 2019 Lexus RX.

For 2019, the RX has standard collision warning, collision braking, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, park assist, 360° camera view, adaptive lighting, and rear view systems. This means that there is a large array of cameras and sensors that collision repairers will need to be aware of, many of which will require calibrations. Located in the front bumper are four ultrasonic sensors. There are an additional four ultrasonic sensors located in the rear bumper. These sensors are used by the park assist system. There are several events that will make calibration necessary for these sensors. The calibration procedure for these sensors is a static calibration.

Behind the front grille, near the Lexus emblem, is a radar sensor. This sensor sends information to the collision warning and collision braking systems, as well as the adaptive cruise control system. Calibration will be required for this sensor after certain events. The calibration procedure for this sensor is a static calibration.

Located just below the Lexus emblem in the grille is the front camera that is part of the 360° camera view system. This four-camera system also has cameras located on the bottom of each exterior side mirror. A final camera is located in the center of the liftgate. The liftgate camera is also used for the rear view system. There are several events that will make calibration necessary for these cameras. The calibration procedure for these cameras is a static calibration.

In front of the rearview mirror, attached to the windshield, is a forward-facing camera. This camera sends data to the adaptive cruise control, collision warning, collision braking, and lane departure warning/lane keep assist (LDW/LKA) systems. There are several events that make calibration necessary for this camera. This is a static calibration procedure.

Located behind the rear bumper cover, there is a radar sensor on each corner of the vehicle. The sensors are mounted to the lower quarter panel directly below the tail lamps. These sensors are used by the blind spot detection and rear cross traffic systems. There are multiple events that require calibration for these sensors. The calibration procedure is a static calibration. There is also a procedure with measurements to ensure the sensor is in the correct location.
