Ford/Lincoln ADAS Repair Planning: Do You Have All The Information?

While researching body repair manuals (BRM) and service manuals, we're creating OEM-specific articles for additional information needed when repair planning. The goal of these articles is to help repairers create a more complete and accurate repair plan. One key aspect of repair planning is being aware of the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) equipped on the vehicle. Let’s take a closer look at two examples from Ford/Lincoln.

The rear bumper removal and installation procedure on a 2019 Ford F-150 does not specify that a system check is required for the rear park assist sensors when they are removed, installed, or replaced. For that information you would need to go to the park assist system information in the Workshop manual. This is a great example that in the event a vehicle has sensors and the part specific repair procedure does not reference those sensors, the information for the sensors should be referenced directly.

Neither the quarter panel replacement procedure nor the rear body panel replacement procedure for a Lincoln MKZ mentions the blind spot module that is mounted to the lower quarter panel. This is important as you cannot remove the lower quarter panel or the rear body panel without removing the side obstacle detection (SOD) module. The Workshop manual specifies the use of a scan tool before removing a module if it is being replaced. Per the 2019 Lincoln MKZ Workshop manual, Side Obstacle Detection Control Module: "If installing a new SODL or SODR, it is necessary to upload the module configuration information to the scan tool prior to removing the module. This information must be downloaded into the new SODL or SODR after installation."

When repair planning, it is always important to look further than just the specific replacement procedure. Additional operations may be needed, such as initialization or calibration procedures. Every OEM has a different way to arrange information in a BRM or service manual. It’s no longer as simple as looking up a single procedure. Being diligent with researching and understating the complete procedure and any corresponding operations is vital to completing a safe and quality repair.
