Honda/Acura Easy Backup Sensor Diagnostics

The 2016 Honda Pilot may have optional backup sensors.

Backup or park assist sensors are being installed on a large number of today’s vehicles. Sensors can become damaged in collisions and it can be difficult to diagnose. However, Honda/Acura has an easier way to let technicians know which sensor may be damaged.

Due to the sensors being a factory accessory, in many cases, they may not be able to be diagnosed with a scan tool. When the ignition is turned on, the sensors may beep one time. If the sensors beep more than once, it indicates a defective sensor. The pattern of the beeps will indicate which sensor or sensors are causing the problem. Per the Honda/Acura Repair Manual:

"Corner Sensors

  • Two fast beeps: right sensor is faulty.
  • Three fast beeps: left sensor is faulty.
  • Four fast beeps: both right and left sensors are faulty.

Center Sensors

  • Two slow beeps: right sensor is faulty.
  • Three slow beeps: left sensor is faulty.
  • Four slow beeps: both right and left sensors are faulty.

Be careful not to confuse the sensor sounds with sounds from other vehicle components."

Also noted, the sensors may not sound if the temperatures are below -4°F or above 122°F. This information will help technicians narrow down the diagnostics on backup sensors and help to quickly locate which sensor is damaged. Visit techinfo.honda.com for more information.
