Body Repair Manual Symbols: Hyundai

While looking at repair procedures in a body repair manual (BRM) you may notice that symbols are used to indicate specific operations or parts to be used during the repair process. Most BRMs provide a glossary or a chart that explains these symbols.

The RTS team is researching BRM symbols and compiling the information into a series of OEM-specific articles. This article series helps you identify and understand the symbols you see in BRMs and instructs you on how to locate symbol descriptions in the manual. Let’s take a look at Hyundai BRM symbols.

Hyundai BRMs utilize symbols along with written instructions in body repair procedures. The General Information document provides a chart of symbols seen in repair procedures.

Once logged into the service information site:

  1. Click Service Materials (top of webpage)
  2. Click Body (top right of webpage)
  3. Select Model from dropdown (top left of webpage)
  4. Select Year from dropdown
  5. Click Body Repair (left of webpage)
  6. Click Body Repair Manual
  7. Click Body Panel Repair Procedure
  8. Click General Information

The General Information document has a separate chart for removal and installation symbols.

The removal chart has symbols for where to cut or how many layers to drill. Hyundai also includes symbols for factory rivet, hidden weld, and laser weld locations.

The installation chart has symbols for the different joining methods found in Hyundai BRMs. A few examples of symbols are:

  • Blue circle with the letter "S" = spot weld
  • Blue circle with the letter "P"= plug weld
  • Blue circle with the letter "R" = rivet

Knowing where to locate symbol tables or charts in body repair manuals and properly deciphering them is essential to help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
