Back-To-Basics: Backside Panel Refinish And Edging

Sometimes, going back to the basics can make the difference between a quality repair and a failed repair. When repairing and refinishing, you might need to refinish the panel's backside and edges.

While sounding similar, panel backside refinishing and edging/jambing are separate tasks. Panel backside refinishing can involve the inside or backside of the roof panel, box side, and quarter panel, etc. The edging of the panel generally consists of the door jambs and fender jambs, among other areas.

The edges and backside of the panels are refinished to restore the vehicle's appearance to pre-accident condition. This task is generally performed before the new or repaired parts are installed. This is done to aid in the complete coverage of areas that cannot be easily accessed or protected after installation. Parts that need to be welded into place may require partial refinishing before they are installed due to a lack of access after installation.

Some vehicle makers have backside panel refinishing procedures, and paint makers have differing requirements for warrantable repairs. Always check the vehicle maker and paint maker refinishing procedures to make sure you are not missing any steps.
