Bumper Cover Repair With ADAS: Jaguar Land Rover - UPDATE

A simple bumper repair on a modern vehicle may not be as simple as it seems. New technologies like blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and other advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) utilize sensors behind the bumper covers. The ability for these sensors to be able to see clearly, normally requires special caution when considering a bumper repair. Many OEMs have different levels of warnings when it comes to repairing bumper covers with ADAS. So, what does Jaguar Land Rover say on the subject?

Jaguar Land Rover have a position statement for Bumper Repair and how it affects ADAS and supplemental restraints systems. Here are several things that the position statement highlights:

"Jaguar Land Rover does not approve or condone any repair methods relating to bumper covers or components associated with the bumper covers unless provided in the Jaguar Land Rover workshop manuals, body repair guides or other technical information issued by Jaguar Land Rover. If there is any doubt please contact your local Jaguar Land Rover Retailer for further information."

"Always refer to Technical Online Product Information Exchange (TOPIx) using the vehicle VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to ensure that the correct vehicle is being viewed in order to check any safety related features pertaining to bumper covers of associated item."

JLR has a document on Plastic Bumper Repair inside of the vehicle specific Workshop manuals that details where repairs can and cannot be made to bumper covers and what type of repairs are allowed. This document also provides some steps on how to perform repairs.

For example, per the 2023 Land Rover Defender (LE) Workshop manual ➤ Body and Paint ➤ Body Repairs - General Information ➤ Plastic Bumper Repair document:

"Any form of repair to a vehicles bumper cover must not impede any vehicle systems operation. This not only presents limitations to a permitted repair zone area but also the type of acceptable repair that may be approved."

These are just some examples of bumper repair restrictions from Jaguar Land Rover. Always be sure to reference the vehicle-specific Workshop manual prior to performing any repairs.
