Paint Maker ADAS Radar Optimized Color Resources: PPG

Changes in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) radar technology are introducing new refinishing considerations. We know that paint film thickness can affect the performance of ADAS radars, but color formula selection may also be a contributing factor. What resources do repairers have available? Let’s see what PPG has to offer.

PPG offers resources relating to ADAS radar optimized color formulas. The following resources are located within a PPG news article Paintmanager XI Software Update v3.4.2210.21 Radar Formulas.

  • PPG PaintManager XI Software RADAR Formulas
    • Offers a list of color which PPG has created Radar formulas
  • PPG Technical Bulletin_ADAS_RADAR
    • Overview why Radar capable formulas are created
    • Shows how PPG will designate Radar capable formulas in PaintManager XI
  • RADAR Colors Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
    • "Why is it important?"
    • "Does Radar transmission loss through painted bumpers affect all colors?"
    • "When should the Radar capable match be used?"

The Technical Bulletin PPG states:

  • "If the loss of RADAR transmission through the painted plastic bumper exceeds a certain threshold, then the functioning of the RADAR may be diminished, and it may not function as designed."
  • "For the small number of colors where the measured RADAR transmission loss is above the threshold set by the vehicle manufacturer, PPG is providing a special, additional “RADAR capable” paint system and color formula."
  • "When searching for a color with the vehicle manufacturer’s color code using the PAINTMANAGER XI software, if a RADAR capable match formula is available it will be displayed on the results screen. If a RADAR capable color match is available, it will also be displayed if a color chip or RAPIDMATCH search is employed."

Improper color selection may cause ADAS to malfunction and potentially fail. Check OEM repair information to identify what restrictions may apply to the repairs you are considering. Always verify that the ADAS is functioning properly after completing repairs.
