Calibration Research Tips: Mitsubishi Radar Sensor
While searching for information on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on an OEM repair information site, you may come across unique calibration procedures or events. These events can vary by year and model, even within a particular make. As the RTS team has been researching these systems, we have been identifying these atypical circumstances. In order to help you better understand them, we are putting together a series of articles that help with the repair and calibration of ADAS. Let’s take a closer look at the Mitsubishi radar sensor.
While searching for component information for the collision warning and collision braking systems, you may notice that the radar sensor is not used. This is because only a select few Mitsubishi vehicles use the radar sensor for these systems. On these select vehicles, the forward-facing camera is used in conjunction with the radar sensor.
The service manual calls this sensor the adaptive cruise control/forward collision mitigation electronic control unit (ACC/FCM-ECU). This radar sensor is located behind the front bumper cover.
On vehicles that do not use the radar sensor, the collision warning and collision braking systems use only the forward-facing camera. The camera detects vehicles in front and allows the system to recognize the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead. The camera is called the forward collision mitigation/lane departure warning/automatic high beam system electronic control unit (FCM/LDW/AHB-ECU).
Knowing what components are used in the operation of a certain ADAS system is important as it can help you diagnose problems. It is also extremely helpful to know when to calibrate sensors and cameras, especially when repairs are carried out on the vehicle that may impede the operation of the components.
