Body Repair Manual Symbols: Nissan/INFINITI

While looking at repair procedures in a body repair manual (BRM) you may notice that symbols are used to indicate specific operations or parts to be used during the repair process. Most BRMs provide a glossary or a chart that explains these symbols.

The RTS team is researching BRM symbols and compiling the information into a series of OEM-specific articles. This article series helps you identify and understand the symbols you see in BRMs and instructs you on how to locate symbol descriptions in the manual. Let’s take a look at Nissan/INFINITI BRM symbols.

Nissan/INFINITI BRMs utilize symbols and written instructions in body repair procedures. The document that has information on body repair symbols is typically titled Description or Replacement: Outline.

After logging into the service information site, to locate these documents in Nissan/INFINITI vehicle-specific service information:

  1. Click View Nissan Publications or View INFINITI Publications (top right side of webpage)
  2. Select Service Manual from Publication Type dropdown (right side of webpage)
  3. Select Model from dropdown
  4. Select Year from dropdown
  5. Click Search Now
  6. Click Body Exterior, Doors, Roof & Vehicle Security (left side of webpage)
  7. Click Body Repair
  8. Click Repair Information
  9. Click Removal And Installation
  10. Click Replacement Operations
  11. Click Description or Replacement: Outline

The Description or Replacement: Outline document has a chart with symbols and descriptions for welding operations and graphics with explanations for cut and joins as seen in procedures. A few examples of symbols are:

  • Black circle "●" = 2-panel spot weld
  • Black square "■" = MAG plug weld
  • Three arches = MAG seam weld

The Description and Replacement: Outline documents state: "Technicians are encouraged to read the Body Repair Manual (Fundamentals) in order to ensure that the original functions and quality of the vehicle are maintained. The Body Repair Manual (Fundamentals) contains additional information, including cautions and warnings, that are not included in this manual. Technicians should refer to both manuals to ensure proper repair."

Knowing where to locate symbol tables or charts in BRMs and properly deciphering them is essential to help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
