App-Based Connected Services Considerations: Mazda

Have you had the experience where the vehicle notified the owner that it was being moved while it was in your repair facility? App-based connected services are available from many vehicle makers and may require special considerations before beginning repairs. Let's see what Mazda has to say.

In 2019, Mazda started offering Mazda Connected Services via the MyMazda app. This app allows contracted vehicles to have functions like remote start, door lock/unlock, and status notifications. To help determine if a vehicle could utilize app-based connected services, Mazda published a Availability Chart to check service availability by year and model.

Mazda may use different terms for their app-based connected services, including:

  • Telematics Communication System
  • Telematics Communication Unit
  • Connected Services
  • Mazda Connect
  • MyMazda

Mazda provides a document with precautions and vehicle-specific instructions for enabling service mode. The document can be found in the vehicle-specific service information under: Workshop Manual ➤ General Information ➤ General Information.

Per the Service Cautions For Vehicles With Telematics Communication System document, Mazda states:

  • "Before servicing a customer's vehicle, always put it in connected services disable mode or connected vehicle maintenance mode."
  • "Connected vehicle maintenance mode is a mode that restricts a part of communications such as the MyMazda App function."
  • "Switching to connected services disable mode or connected vehicle maintenance mode prevents the customer from being notified of the vehicle condition while it is being serviced or the customer making a remote operation while the vehicle is being serviced."

Determining whether a vehicle is contracted for connected services can be challenging. Mazda dealers have access to Mazda Connected Vehicle Viewer (MCVV) that may show if the vehicle is connected. This document may also include notes to help determine the contracted status of the vehicle.

For example, per the 2024 CX-5 service information:

  • "For vehicles on which the following icon is displayed, it indicates that the telematics communication system service is not contracted."
  • "For vehicles on which the TCU icon is not displayed, it indicates that the telematics communication system is not equipped."

Always remember to disable service mode and restore any modified vehicle settings before returning the vehicle to the owner.
