Adaptive Lighting Calibration After Headlamp Removal

Many vehicles are equipped with adaptive lighting systems that adjust vertically and horizontally while the vehicle is being driven. For these systems to function, they require the use of several inputs located in multiple locations of the vehicle.

Examples of some of the inputs include:

  • Height/level sensor
  • Speed sensor
  • Steering angle sensor (SAS)

Each of the above components send information to the adaptive lighting control module which tells the headlamps to move up and down, or left to right.

Typically calibration is not required after removal or replacement of the headlamp. Most OEMs only require headlamp beam aiming upon installation. Calibration is required, in most cases, after replacement of the sensors and modules used to operate the headlamps. Some vehicles even require calibration if suspension components are removed, installed, or replaced. Keep in mind that special tools may be needed to carry out the calibration procedure.

Always check with the vehicle specific service manual for calibration requirements and procedures. It is important to be familiar with system components and procedures in order to ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
